Our conference theme is "Flipping the Script," a phrase with origins in American hip-hop and graffiti culture from the late-1980s and early-1990s, yet lately is attributed to narratives and storylines that often take empowering, unexpected, provocative twists.
Proposals should connect with this broader concept and one or more of the following sub-themes. Let's name and notice the moments that hold broader educational value for our communities and personal value for us as APISA educators: speakers who usually do not hold the microphone, or the arcs of fictional or real-life narratives that defy so-called "conventions." In which moments have we (and/or the students we serve) found our voices? How do we each become stronger actors in the fight against structural racism? What have been some successes and setbacks in policy and practice, from the equity work of summer of 2020 to our pre-planning the 2024-25 academic year? How do APISA educators find accomplices and ongoing mentorship in the work of DEIB?
Lastly, Atlanta "flips the script" by being AsEA's first conference to be held in the Southeast U.S. In 2024, Atlanta will become the sixth-largest American metropolitan area, with APISA populations representing the region's fastest-growing population. Join us to learn more about how APISA voices are shaping Atlanta's present moment for film, TV, music, food, business, politics, education, and everyday life.
