Conference Theme

Radical (Re)Imagining of Asian America: From Myths to Truths

Asians, Pacific Islanders, and South Asians in the Americas are famously subject to the model minority myth, the fallacious narrative that depicts us as passive, obedient, hard-working, and successful. The myth exists partially to be wielded against other marginalized groups, but it has myriad of harmful effects on us as well. These include: denying our diversity of culture, class, and experience; permitting limited achievement for some but leadership for virtually none; and limiting our representation in popular culture. A corollary myth is that racism does not apply to us—thereby undermining our solidarity with other marginalized groups. The aim of this year’s conference is to critique and dismantle these and other myths by re-imagining APISA America. How do we become visible? How do we become stronger actors in the fight against structural racism? How do we liberate ourselves from restrictive stereotypes? How do we fight for what we want rather than accept what we are given? What do we need to do in order to be in solidarity and work toward liberation for all? How do we dispel the myths and find our truths?

The conference will take place at Sage Hill School in Newport Coast, CA from March 26-27, 2022.

We welcome all educators who identify as Asian, Pacific Islander, South Asian (APISA)
from early childhood through higher education institutions, public and private.

For the 2022 conference, we are offering a program
for APISA students as well. Students will be in facilitated sessions focusing on identity, activism, and leadership.

Decentering Ourselves from Whiteness
For many Asian-Americans, wearing a face mask meant putting on protective gear that, ironically, would offer no protection from "Kung Flu.” The Halo Effect has never worked in favor of People of Color. It is the cognitive bias suggesting that what is beautiful is good and is also referred to as the physical attractiveness stereotype. Beauty isn’t about taste but geopolitics, and there is a history of positive body image centered on whiteness. Racism in America solidified this by recruiting some of us to join them by calling Asians like Justine, the model minority. This keynote will examine this type of oppression through storytelling and a social-emotional lens. Attendees will be able to reflect on their own body image and the society that influences it.
